Vibration Isolation of Heat Pumps on Residential Building

Upgrade of Elastomeric Bearings to GERB Spring Elements

Residential buildings are way more sesnitive in case of vibrations because of the individual lifestyle and sentiments of each resident. Whereas a certain level of vibration stress is normal in an industrial environment, this does not apply to residential buildings, where people‘s quality of life is severely affected. Disturbing excitations need to be isolated to protect the living environment.

In this case, the vibrations originate from the operation of heat pumps on the roof of a residential building. The initial solution to isolate the vibrations was not successful and made the house uninhabitable. GERB was consulted about the problem in April 2022. After some measurements, a suitable solution was already installed in May.

Challenge

The residential building in Waalwijk NL is equipped with two heat pumps on the roof. The two pumps are mounted on elastomeric
bearings. When the pumps are in operation, strong vibrations occur that affect appartments in the building. The elastomer elements cannot sufficiently reduce the negative effects of the vibrations. As a result, it is not possible to rent out the flats inside. A new elastic support solution is required to reduce vibrations inside the building.

Solution

In cooperation between GERB experts and Mr. Olree from Soundproof Walls, a new bearing on GERB spring elements was calculated. The heat pumps were set up again on the spring elements and new measurements in different rooms were taken. The results showed a reduction of the sound pressure level of 10 dB(A) inside the building. This corresponds to a halving of the perceived loudness and a reduction of the sound power by a factor of 10.

Implementation

Both the sound pressure measurements and the assembly were
carried out by our project partner Mr. Olree. He placed a total of
four spring elements between the machine frame and the support
of the roof. Due to the outdoor installation, the spring elements
were selected in a closed housing variant. For additional securing
of the elements, due to the narrow beam, fastening clamps were
used in addition to the fabric panels.
